AN EVALUATION OF CONSUMER SEGMENTS FOR FARMERS’ MARKET CONSUMERS IN INDIANA AND ILLINOIS AgEcon
Arrington, Kendra; Dennis, Jennifer H.; Mazzocco, Michael A..
In Spring 2005 and Fall 2009 consumer surveys were collected in several Metropolitan 4 cities in Indiana and Illinois to explore differences based on psychographic and behavioral 5 characteristics of farmers’ market consumers. Consumer intercept surveys were conducted in: 6 South Bend, IN; Bloomington, IN; Springfield, IL and Peoria, IL. Likert scale questions were 7 analyzed using factor and hierarchical cluster analysis to identify clusters of consumers based on 8 several farmers’ market characteristics. Survey results show that of the 164 Metropolitan 9 surveys analyzed, 85.3% of respondents were Caucasian, 71.9% were between the ages of 35 and 10 64 and 78% were female. Data analysis showed that four clusters were formed: Recreational 11 (42%),...

An hedonic approach applied to scanner data on cured ham purchases in Spain AgEcon
Resano, H.; Sanjuan, Ana Isabel.
A quantity-dependent hedonic model is used to study consumers’ actual purchases of cured ham, recorded through scanner in Spain, between April 2003 and March 2004. A Zero Inflated Negative Binomial (ZIB) model is applied because of the high proportion of zero purchase-values and the finding of overdispersion in the data. Ham characteristics are used as explanatory variables, such as breed, origin, EU Quality Certification squemes (PDO, PGI, STG), type of brand (producer’s and distributor’s), sale format (whole leg, vacuum packaged, on request), ripening period and price. Monthly dummies variables are also added to capture a possible seasonal effect. The results show that the distributor’s brand, the whole leg sale format, the origin Teruel and its...

Assessing rural consumers’ WTP for orange, biofortified maize in Ghana with experimental auctions and a simulated radio message AgEcon
De Groote, Hugo; Tomlins, Keith; Haleegoah, Joyce; Awool, Manfred; Frimpong, Benedicta; Banerji, Abijit; Chowdury, Shyamal K.; Meenakshi, J.V..
Deficiencies of micronutrients such as vitamin A are widespread, expecially in Africa. Biofortified crops such as maize, bred for high levels of provitamin A might offer a solution, but these crops are often bright orange, and African maize consumers prefer white. To estimate the consumers interest in orange biofortified maize, sensory evaluations were organized in rural Ghana with white, yellow and orange maize. The effect of information on willingness to pay for biofortification was estimated using a simulated radio message. Results indicate that color preferences are highly regional, wide variation exist within regions, and the provision of information is able to change these preferences. The color of biofortified maize should therefore not be seen as...

Australian Consumers' Concerns and Preferences for Food Policy Alternatives AgEcon
Umberger, Wendy J.; Scott, Emily M.; Stringer, Randy.
Results from a 2007 Australian consumer survey conducted at a large farmers market are used to explore the hypothesis that consumers who are more concerned about certain types of food labeling information, particularly information related to food production attributes, are more likely to support policies which help develop farmers markets and support mandatory labeling policies. Product information and attributes such as Country-of-Origin, No Growth Hormones Used, Free Range and Animals Treated Humanely and Environmentally-friendly appear to be very important to consumers. It appears that respondents want increased government involvement in developing consistent food labelling standards for these attributes and support mandatory food labelling policies,...

Cattle breeding in Northern Australia: Revealing how consumers react to new technologies AgEcon
Pluske, Johanna M.; Burton, Michael P.; Rigby, Dan; Vercoe, Philip E..
In Australia, Bos taurus cattle breeds produce high quality meat, superior in taste and tenderness characteristics. Nevertheless, these breeds do not thrive in the Northern Australian environment. Stem cell transplant techniques could improve northern beef cattle breeding programs by facilitating crossbreeding via natural service. Focus groups were used in this study to explore consumer reaction to reproduction technologies and the implications for buying intentions. Findings suggested that consumers may react negatively to unconventional breeding technologies but the degree of this aversion is contingent upon how the technology is described. These findings are relevant for preparation of choice modeling surveys.

Mateus, Karina Aline; Oliveira, Taís Cardoso de; Santos, Moisés Rodrigues dos; Zieher, Gabriel; Zampar, Aline; Cucco, Diego de Córdova.
This study aimed to analyze the profile of beef sold and consumed in Chapecó – SC, Brazil. Were interviewed 31 individuals responsible for the main distributors, supermarkets, meat markets, restaurants and steakhouses. The structured questionnaire method was used, with questions of closed and open answers applied to those responsible for the establishments previously mapped with greater representativeness in the municipality regarding the characteristics related to the meat trade and the type of product. With the results obtained, it was possible to identify the lack of information regarding the attributes and characteristics that direct preferences in the acquisition of a quality beef. Thus, the knowledge exposure, information dissemination and concepts...

CONSUMER PERCEPTION TOWARDS TRADITIONAL SERBIAN AGRICULTURAL AND FOOD PRODUCTS AgEcon
Zaric, Vlade; Petkovic, Danijela; Radosevic, Milorad.
Market success depends in large part on how well consumer behaviour and perception supplies understand. They need to understand how consumers evaluate products characteristics, gather information regarding various alternatives and use this information to select specific product. The object of this research was to determine consumer perception of Serbian agricultural and food products and especially perception of home made products. In October 2008, a research was conducted in the Belgrade market on a sample of 338 persons. The results were analyzed using univariant statistical analyses. The results of this research can be used by producers for defining marketing activities and by researchers to conduct further research in this field.

Consumers' Perceptions about Food Quality Attributes and Their Incidence in Argentinean Organic Choices AgEcon
Rodriguez, Elsa M.; Lupin, Beatriz; Lacaze, Maria Victoria.
There is an increasing consumers' concern for food safety and quality and, at the same time, there has been a significant market increment in differentiated or high value products consumption, including organic products. The lack of empirical research in Argentina regarding consumers' awareness of food safety brought our attention. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to analyse consumers' perceptions about the risk and quality attributes of food consumption; and to evaluate the incidence of these factors when buying organic products in Argentina. The Lancaster model (1966) provided the theoretical basis for the use of products attributes and characteristics to analyse the incidence of these attributes in consumers' choices. The data used in this...

Distributional Impacts of Food Price Changes on Consumer Welfare in Hungary and Romania following EU Accession AgEcon
Hubbard, Carmen; Szigeti, Judith; Podruzsik, Szilard.
This paper focuses on the estimation of changes in economic welfare (real income) on different groups (income deciles) of Hungarian and Romanian consumers following food price changes as a result of accession to the European Union (EU) in 2004 and 2007. It identifies in both countries those consumer groups most vulnerable to food price changes using the most recent, official, post accession data. Slutsky Compensating Variation, based on Laspeyres indexes is employed for a food basket of 16 products. The results show that real food prices have changed with some going up and others falling. However, overall both Hungary and Romania have experienced a rise in real food prices by 9 per cent and 20 per cent, respectively. The rise in food prices has resulted in...

Do Labour Standards have a Role in International Trade?: Private Standards, Preferential Trade Agreements or the WTO AgEcon
Bakhshi, Samira; Kerr, William A..
It is now common for producers (economic protectionism), consumers and social advocates (humanitarian motives) to urge for the inclusion of labour standards in international trade agreements. In spite of this, there has been little empirical work to determine whether low labour standards lead to trade distortions. This paper provides some empirical evidence pertaining to this question. Consumer groups, social advocates and traditional vested interests such as labour unions have attempted to have labour standards included in WTO disciplines. In the absence of success at the WTO, the relationship between labour standards and international trade has, however, been evolving in the areas of private standards and preferential trade agreements. Given the role...

Emerging Issues in the U.S. Organic Industry AgEcon
Greene, Catherine R.; Dimitri, Carolyn; Lin, Biing-Hwan; McBride, William D.; Oberholtzer, Lydia; Smith, Travis A..
Consumer demand for organic products has widened over the last decade. While new producers have emerged to help meet demand, market participants report that a supply squeeze is constraining growth for both individual firms and the organic sector overall. Partly in response to shortages in organic supply, Congress in 2008 included provisions in the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act (2008 Farm Act) that, for the first time, provide financial support to farmers to convert to organic production. This report examines recent economic research on the adoption of organic farming systems, organic production costs and returns, and market conditions to gain a better understanding of the organic supply squeeze and other emerging issues in this rapidly changing...

Estudio de las preferencias de consumidores y distribuidores especializados respecto del producto ecologico AgEcon
Sanchez Garcia, Mercedes; Sanjuan, Ana Isabel; Gil Roig, Jose Maria; Gracia, Azucena; Soler, Francisco.

Ethnic food preferences in the Spanish market AgEcon
Camarena-Gomez, Dena M.; Sanjuan, Ana Isabel.
A labelled choice experiment is conducted in order to investigate preferences of Spanish consumers towards ethnic cuisines. In particular, the three best known cuisines, Mexican, Arab and Asian, are considered, across three consumption situations: restaurant, take-away and at home. Wald statistics are applied in order to assess the differential marginal utilities of ethnic food in alternative consumption situations, and the appropriateness of considering a linear effect in price.

Evidence on the Value of EU Quality Certification Schemes. The Case of Dry-cured Ham in Spain AgEcon
Resano, H.; Ana, I. Sanjuan; Albisu, Luis Miguel.
Consumer’s preferences for cured ham are investigated with conjoint analysis. A mixed rank-ordered logit model which allows the investigation for heterogeneous preferences and its sources is estimated. In particular, we analyse to what extent consumers’ socio-demographic traits affect their price-sensitiveness and whether consumer’s sensory (hedonic) valuations and attitudes towards ham with a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) affect the preferences for specific attributes. The results show that consumers with a low-medium age and income are more price sensitive. Consumers more leaned sensorially towards the own regional product (with or without PDO), are more inclined to purchase this product, and consumers with a more favourable attitude towards PDO...

Factors influencing Malaysian consumers’ consumption of dairy products AgEcon
Boniface, Bonaventure; Umberger, Wendy J..
Increasing demand for dairy products in Malaysia is driving government initiatives and structural change in the domestic dairy industry in order to increase competitiveness and self-sufficiency. This study endeavours to investigate the drivers of increasing dairy demand by examining the factors influencing Malaysian consumers‟ consumption and perceptions of various types of dairy products. A survey of 435 respondents was conducted and the data were analysed using logit models. The results indicate that demographic variables such as age and ethnicity as well as other attitudinal variables significantly influence consumers‟ increasing consumption of dairy products. Managerial recommendations for the domestic dairy industry are suggested and policy...
